Biography
Attorney Karamat Qayum is dedicated to representing the immigrant community and people who have been injured by the negligence of others. He was born in Medellín, Colombia. Mr. Qayum came to the United States at the young age of 10, and he was undocumented in the United States for a period of time. He is fluent in English and Spanish. The lawyer is trained to understand the concerns and difficulties that people have in legal processes.
Attorney Qayum graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Florida International University. While earning his undergraduate degree, he served as an intern at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, where he gained invaluable knowledge about the criminal justice process. He is also a proud alumnus of Florida International University School of Law.
While in law school, he participated in the Immigrant Children’s Justice Clinic, where he represented immigrant children subject to removal proceedings. He also participated in the Community Development Clinic, where he provided legal advice and transactional services to small businesses and nonprofit organizations. These experiences provided him with the necessary knowledge about the justice system in the United States to advise his clients in their legal processes.
Attorney Qayum served as a judicial intern for Judge Stacy D. Glick. Additionally, he was a judicial officer for the United States Department of Justice Executive Office of Immigration Review, where he advised and drafted legal decisions for immigration judges on matters related to individual removal cases. He later worked at a prestigious immigration law firm located in Coral Gables. He then opened the doors to his own law firm, Garcia & Qayum Law Group, P.A.
Attorney Qayum has been the president of the Colombian American Bar Association (COLBAR). He also served on the board of directors of the Miami-Dade Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board, where he advised Miami-Dade commissioners on issues of need in the Hispanic community. Attorney Qayum was also selected for inclusion in Florida Rising Stars in 2019 - 2024. Only 2.5% of lawyers in the state receive this annual distinction.
